``Pakistan today conducted a successful test of its first- ever ground-launched cruise missile HATF-VII, also known as Babur,'' the army said from Islamabad. The ``Babur cruise has the capability to carry nuclear and conventional warheads to a range of 500 kilometers (300 miles) with a pinpoint accuracy.''
Pakistan and India, both nuclear powers, have tested a series of missiles since 2002 when the two countries came close to a fourth war. They have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, two of them over the divided Himalayan territory of Kashmir, which is claimed in full by both.
``Given that Pakistan has a far smaller army than India, the test firing of the missile is an important technological achievement,'' said Ishtiaq Ahmed, Associate Professor International Relations at the Islamabad-based Quaid-i-Azam University.

On Aug. 8, the two countries agreed to maintain the cease- fire on the border separating them as part of confidence building measures to ease tensions. Last week Pakistan and India agreed to notify each other before testing ballistic missiles. Pakistan didn't notify India before conducting today's test. ``The agreement for notifying each other is only for ballistic missiles, while this is a cruise missile,'' army spokesman General Shaukat Sultan said in a phone interview.
