We were in Kandy and we were looking for that bed that we were destined to sleep in. As soon as we reached Kandy by bus and just randomly started walking the city. We were guided to a small place run by this woman who was very friendly to us. Also, there was a backpacker from a far eastern Asian country. The room was quite compact and the toilets were not particularly clean. We had to take a call between settling for this one and search for another not knowing where to look, especially difficult choice as it was around dinner time. We chose the latter and walked and walked. We passed by a young couple sitting by the lake. We accidentally walked into a police station thinking it was a road leading to a certain hotel as mentioned in Lonely Planet, Sri Lanka.
There wasn't anyone who we could ask for directions. All that was going on in our minds was that, there will be a bed that is waiting for us and we will not be left room less. We finally found our way to Olde Empire, which is listed as a backpacker's paradise and the one that was the closest to the tooth relic temple. The place looked very uptown as there were pizza hut and a levis store (that I remember as of today). Most importantly, when I stepped on the road to cross, the vehicles approaching me in the road stopped without me having to wait for it to pass. The latter being the default in India. I was super thrilled about what I experienced when I crossed the road.
We wasted no time in selecting the spacious room that was on offer for the three of us and the shared toilets. It was a lot more than what we had bargained for and perhaps one of the best stays in Sri Lanka. It reinforced that there will be a bed for us to sleep every night and it will call out for you. Even tonight, the night you'll hit after you read this blogpost.
